Much of masculinity is about risk taking… Unfortunately, here in the US, and I suspect in most of the rest of the world, the public education system tries to squelch any masculine tendencies exhibited by young boys. This “ better safe than sorry”, “out of an abundance of caution” mindset results in the feminization of many boys. Often, when they try to break this mold, post puberty, they end up acting out, which is not good for them or society.
The longhouse doesn’t seek to control men so much as to marginalize them. It tells girls what they must do, but it only tells guys what they’re NOT allowed to do.
Venturing out into manhood involves trial and error and taking risks. To do that, a boy needs safety and agency. The longhouse seeks to deprive him of both.
"When you marry, you leave a lot of fun stuff at the door"
I think this perspective is what makes a lot of people never satisfied with their relationships. I look at it from a different angle. Marrying, or being in a relationship, only freed me from things I never liked doing and only did in the past to meet women.
Of course, you have to marry someone who's compatible with you for it to work.
